Hey guys! So, there was a big protest in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State. The members of the ruling Labour Party were really mad because one of their senators got sacked by the Appeal Court. His name is Senator Darlington Nwokocha and he represents Abia Central. The protesters were not happy about this at all!
According to Vanguard, the Court of Appeal in Lagos said that Senator Nwokocha was no longer the senator and that another guy named Col. Austin Akobundu (retd.) from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won the election instead. But the protesters didn’t agree with this decision. They wanted the judgment to be reviewed and they also wanted an investigation into the people who made the judgment.
The protesters were really passionate about their cause. They were singing songs and carrying signs that said things like “Judicial impunity must stop” and “We voted for Darlington Nwokocha and not Col. Austin Akobundu.” They were really upset that their chosen senator was being replaced.
The protesters were all dressed in black and they thought the judgment was really unfair. The Chairman of the Labour Party in the state, Mr Ceekay Igara, said that this was a big blow to democracy and that the people’s choice should not be changed just because of some technicalities. He also mentioned that the people in the constituency were really unhappy about this decision.
Mr Igara also wondered why the same appeal panel that sacked Senator Nwokocha still upheld the election of another member, Chief Ginger Onwusibe, who had a similar case. It just didn’t make sense to him.
