The upcoming governorship election in Edo State is an important event, and the Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Hilary Otsu, wants to make sure the party doesn’t make a mistake. He is urging the PDP to select a candidate who is well-liked by the people.
Otsu shared his concerns in a statement released in Benin on Wednesday. He believes that the voters in Edo State are paying close attention to the political landscape and will only support a candidate who is popular.
In the previous general elections held in 2023, the PDP suffered losses in some constituencies because they fielded candidates who were relatively unknown. Otsu wants to avoid a repeat of this situation in the upcoming election.
Otsu also warned against the imposition of candidates. He believes that the voters are already aware of any unfair practices that may occur during the candidate selection process.
During the last elections, many voters were unhappy with the way the PDP candidates were chosen. They felt that the process was not fair and transparent. As a result, some PDP supporters decided to vote for candidates from other parties, such as the All Progressives Congress and the Labour Party.
Otsu pointed out that this shift in support led to unexpected victories for these opposition parties. He mentioned that the PDP had never lost the Edo Central and South Senatorial seats before, but in the last election, the Labour Party candidate won the Edo South Senate seat after leaving the PDP just a few months prior.
It is clear that the PDP needs to learn from past mistakes and choose a candidate who is popular and well-liked by the people of Edo State. By doing so, they can increase their chances of winning the governorship election in 2024.
