Hey there, middle schoolers! So, something funny happened in the Senate recently. The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, had a message for the new chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Ola Olukoyede. He basically told him, “Don’t use me as an example in the fight against corruption!”
During the screening of Olukoyede by the Senate members, he mentioned the Senate President while talking about investigating a corruption case. But then he noticed that everyone was in a funny mood, so he stopped talking.
That’s when Akpabio spoke up and said, “I’m happy that you want to use the Senate President as an example. But for now, let’s focus on these guys over here!” He was pointing at the opposition lawmakers.
Olukoyede continued his presentation without mentioning any names. He said, “When you fight corruption, you become the enemy of everybody.” That’s why everyone found it funny when he mentioned the Senate President in the first place.
Now, let me give you some background information. Akpabio is actually facing a case of misappropriation of a huge amount of money, around N108.1 billion, before the EFCC. That’s a lot of money!
In April 2021, there were reports that Akpabio was even detained because he allegedly tried to bribe the former boss of the EFCC with $350,000. Bribery is a big no-no!
So, that’s why it was funny when Olukoyede mentioned Akpabio during his presentation. Akpabio didn’t want to be used as an example because he’s already in trouble with the EFCC.
