Hey there, middle schoolers! Today, we’re going to talk about why the number of House committees increased from 109 to 134. The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, recently explained the reasons behind this decision. Let’s dive in!
According to Speaker Abbas, the main goal behind increasing the number of committees was to ensure efficiency. In the past, not all committees were active due to various reasons. But this time, the House wants to make sure that every standing committee fulfills its responsibilities and works for the betterment of Nigeria.
In addition to efficiency, the House also created a committee to ensure that the legislative agenda of the House is complied with. This means that they want to make sure that the House’s plans and goals are being followed and implemented properly.
One specific example given by the speaker was the division of the committee on tertiary education. The old committee had too many institutions to oversee, which made it difficult for them to cover everything within a year. So, they decided to divide the committee into several smaller committees. This way, each committee can focus on a specific group of institutions and give them the attention they deserve.
