Just a few days before the governorship elections in Imo State, something really scary happened. The governorship candidate of the Labour Party, Senator Athan Achonu, was attacked in the state.
Achonu was on his way to St Peter’s Anglican Church when his convoy was ambushed by some thugs. These thugs had set up a roadblock with an Armored Personnel Carrier (APC), an All Progressive Congress-branded Sienna, and a Hilux truck.
Thankfully, Achonu and his team managed to escape the attack. The Director of Media and Publicity to Senator Athan Achonu Campaign Organisation, Chibuikem Diala, explained that the police officers at the roadblock started shooting at the convoy. They even hit one of the bulletproof Lexus SUVs in the convoy, but luckily, no one was hurt.
Despite the Police Commissioner’s intervention, one police officer named Oladimeji refused to let Achonu pass. Another man named ‘TAKPE’ also threatened to destroy all the cars in the convoy. This caused a lot of panic among the women in the convoy.
To avoid any further confrontation, the DSS and other security officers accompanying Senator Achonu decided to move him and his team to safety.
