The Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a prominent Igbo sociocultural organization, has called on Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to retire from politics.
Ohanaeze expressed its gratitude towards the G-5 governors led by Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), for putting an end to Atiku’s lifelong ambition.
The factional Secretary-General of Ohanaeze, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, stated that Atiku should retire from politics due to his disregard for the zoning formula during the last presidential election.
Isiguzoro also commended former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Ayo Adebanjo, the leader of Afenifere, for their support towards Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP).
The statement from Ohanaeze read, “Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s lifelong ambition to become president has reached its conclusion. It is now the opportune moment for him to gracefully retire from active politics.”
Ohanaeze emphasized that Atiku’s age necessitates this sacrifice to salvage the PDP, as he externally damaged the party in 2015 by aligning with the APC to remove Jonathan and internally in 2023 by disregarding the zoning formula that favored the Southeast and the Igbo people.
