The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has expressed his disappointment with some social media users who spread information without professionalism and patriotism.
Idris clarified that the government does not intend to silence any media organization but rather aims to promote responsible journalism. He made these remarks after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
President Tinubu plans to initiate a national dialogue on orientation and reorientation to rebuild Nigerians’ trust in their nation. This dialogue aims to restore confidence and renew the belief in Nigeria.
When asked about addressing the negative aspects of social media, the minister emphasized the importance of responsible journalism. While the government supports press freedom, it also expects journalists to be accountable and patriotic in their reporting.
The Minister expressed concern over the loss of values and lack of trust among citizens, which hinders the nation’s progress. President Tinubu’s administration is actively working to reintroduce discipline, patriotism, and belief in Nigeria’s ideals, as instilled by the founding fathers.
