Hey there, middle schoolers! Guess what? The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has made a big decision. He wants to tear down a place where scavengers live in Abuja. This place is called a colony and it’s located in Mabushi, Jahi, and Kado Districts.
Mr. Wike thinks this colony is a big problem for the city’s safety. He went to visit the area and saw that it’s right behind the Minister’s Quarters in Mabushi District. He said it’s a “threat” to the security of the city. The colony is filled with scavengers, who are people that collect and sell things they find. There are also mechanics and furniture makers there.
Mr. Wike doesn’t want any criminals in the city, so he ordered the demolition of the colony. He brought along security personnel and important officials to help him. He wants to make sure the city is safe for everyone.
Did you know that the colony was encouraged by the thick canopy of cashew trees? These trees were planted by the people who live in the FCT. But Mr. Wike says they shouldn’t have planted them there because the government wants to develop that area. He warned them not to plant trees in places where the government has plans for something else. And guess what? The government won’t pay them any money for those trees.
Mr. Wike told the Development Control Department and the Federal Capital Development Authority to clear the whole area. They will also start working on the road. He said the government won’t compensate the people who live there because it’s a hiding place for criminals. He also wants the communities to stop planting trees in that area.
