Today, the secretariat of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo state has been sealed off by security operatives. This is in response to a planned protest against the continued absence of the state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, who has been away for medical reasons.
The Nigerian Police and the Department of State Security (DSS) sealed off the secretariat to prevent the protest from taking place. The security operatives arrived at the party secretariat early in the morning to ensure that the protest does not happen.
A party source revealed that the police and DSS officers sealed off the secretariat to prevent a peaceful protest by PDP youths who are demanding to know Akeredolu’s whereabouts since his return from abroad in April 2023. The state’s Publicity Secretary of the party, Kennedy Peretei, confirmed this development.
The ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) and the opposition PDP have been trading words over alleged plans to cause a crisis in the state due to Akeredolu’s absence. The APC accused the PDP of trying to create instability and tarnish their image ahead of the next year’s governorship election.
The Publicity Secretary of the APC in Ondo state, Alex Kalejaye, claimed that the PDP has formed an alliance with some elements in the APC to create a crisis in the state capital, Akure. Their aim is to make the ruling party look bad and create political instability.
