Hey there, middle schoolers! Today, we’re going to talk about something happening in Nigeria. Femi Falana, a really smart lawyer, is saying that Abba Yusuf, the Governor of Kano State, is still the governor. But wait, didn’t people think he was removed from office? Well, it turns out that the Court of Appeal in Abuja said that Abba Yusuf’s election was actually upheld, which means he is still the governor!
So, Femi Falana looked at a special document called the Certified True Copy of the judgment. He found something really interesting. The Court of Appeal’s decision was different from what people thought. They said that the lower court’s ruling was wrong and that Abba Yusuf should still be the governor. They even gave him some money to cover his costs and granted him all the things he asked for. That’s pretty cool, right?
Falana thinks that we should go back to following the recommendations of the Justice Uwais Electoral Committee. This committee had some ideas on how to make elections fair and reflect what the people want. Falana also thinks that we shouldn’t blame individuals for the mistakes made by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Instead, he wants a new group called the Independent Electoral Offences Commission to handle these mistakes. He even thinks that INEC should be split into two parts – one for conducting elections and another for dealing with election mistakes and political parties. That way, everything can be more organized and fair.
So, that’s what Femi Falana is saying. Abba Yusuf is still the governor, and Falana wants some changes to make elections better. It’s important to understand what’s happening in the world, even if it seems a little complicated sometimes. Stay curious, my friends!
