The Social Democratic Party, SDP, has accused Governor Yahaya Bello of sponsoring attacks on its members ahead of the governorship election in Kogi State. SDP flagbearer, Muritala Yakubu Ajaka, is seen as one of the leading candidates in the governorship poll.
Addressing a press conference in Lokoja on Wednesday, the Director General, New Media, Muri/Sam Campaign Council, Isaiah Davies Ibele, appealed to President Bola Tinubu, security agencies, and the international community to call Bello to order.
The SDP chieftain expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in Kogi State. He questioned the low percentage of salaries being paid to workers and accused Bello’s administration of using local government chairmen to oppress and attack SDP supporters.
The SDP leader challenged the APC governorship candidate, Usman Ahmed Ododo, to a live debate. He emphasized that the people of Kogi State have made up their minds to remove the ruling party from power.
Another SDP leader, Sheikh Ibrahim, highlighted the fear and insecurity faced by party supporters in various parts of Kogi State. He criticized Bello’s leadership, stating that the successor he is bringing would only worsen the problems faced by the people.
In response to the allegations, the Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo, stated that the government’s priority is to protect all the people of Kogi State, regardless of their political affiliations. He dismissed the allegations as baseless without any evidence.
