The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has announced that he has accepted the public apology from his deputy, Philip Shaibu. However, Obaseki also mentioned that Shaibu’s unwarranted provocation caused him a lot of personal discomfort.
Shaibu’s desire to succeed Obaseki in 2024 led to a disagreement between him and the governor. As a result, Obaseki moved the deputy governor’s office out of the Government House. He also disbanded Shaibu’s media crew and removed him from his position as the head of revenue generation agencies in the state. However, Shaibu realized his mistake and begged Obaseki for forgiveness.
Obaseki accepted Shaibu’s apology in a letter titled ‘Re: Public Apology by Shaibu’. In the letter, Obaseki mentioned that he had noticed Shaibu’s public apology and acknowledged that it went against the values of the people of Edo State. He also mentioned the unnecessary petitions filed by Shaibu in Nigerian courts and the unwarranted attacks on him and the State Government in the media.
Although these provocations caused Obaseki a lot of personal discomfort, he decided to accept the apology because of his faith. He believes in the saying, “to err is human, to forgive is divine.” Obaseki hopes that Shaibu’s apology is genuine and that he will take steps to improve his conflict resolution skills. He also encourages Shaibu to guide his supporters to act in a more respectful manner.
