250 Nigerians Mistreated in Ethiopian Prisons: What You Need to Know
Hey there, middle schoolers! Today, we’re going to talk about something really important. You may have heard about the maltreatment of 250 Nigerians in Ethiopian prisons. It’s a serious issue that has been making waves on social media. Let’s dive in and learn more about what’s been happening.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time Nigerians have faced mistreatment in prisons outside their own country. In the past, there have been distressing stories about how Nigerians were treated in prisons in China, especially in Guangdong. Some even claimed that some Nigerians were secretly killed and their organs were taken for illegal business.
Similar mistreatment has been reported in other Chinese prisons, including those in Beijing. It’s not just China, though. Nigerian prison inmates in other Asian countries like Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia have also faced terrible conditions.
Moreover, Nigerian migrants trying to escape to Europe through Libya have ended up in Libyan prisons, where they have experienced unimaginable hardships. So, when a video by Dr. Paul Ezike surfaced online, showing the plight of Nigerians in Ethiopian prisons, it raised even more concerns because this time, it involved a fellow African country.
In the video, Dr. Ezike expressed his fear that over 250 Nigerians were in danger of losing their lives if immediate action wasn’t taken by the Nigerian government or other organizations. He claimed that most of these inmates were innocent travelers who were just passing through the Ethiopia airport as a transit hub.
According to the reports, many of these Nigerians didn’t commit any crime. Their only “offense” was being Nigerian. Dr. Ezike confirmed this in his video, saying, “Once you have a green passport, you are like a suspect. They will keep you aside, delay you, and make you miss your flight. They try to provoke you, and if you get angry and argue, they will demand $5,000 to book another flight back to Nigeria.”
He further explained that if you speak up too much, they will take you to the hospital, find nothing wrong with you, and then send you straight to prison. They even give you a paper saying you’ll be imprisoned for 18 to 20 years without even taking you to court!
