Did you know that in the past four years, more than 50 people have lost their lives in rivers along major roads in Ogun State? It’s a shocking truth that we need to talk about. These unfortunate incidents happened when vehicles accidentally plunged into the rivers, abruptly ending the travelers’ journeys.
Most of these tragic accidents occurred along the Lagos-Benin highway, which stretches from Lagos to Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode, Ore, Benin, and Delta. This road is crucial as it connects the bustling city of Lagos with the South-South, the South-East, and other parts of the country. Ogun State has the longest stretch of this highway, making it a busy route for vehicles traveling to and from Lagos.
One of the victims of these accidents was a well-known Mass Communication Professor at Lagos State University (LASU), Lai Oso. On June 24, 2023, Professor Oso lost his life when his car plunged into a river along the Ijebu axis of Ogun State. The driver had fallen asleep at the wheel, causing the vehicle to skid off the Sagamu-Ore highway and into the water. Unfortunately, both Professor Oso and the driver were unable to escape as they were wearing seat belts, resulting in their tragic deaths.
It’s important to note that not all accidents are witnessed by others. There may be cases where vehicles have plunged into the water at night or when no one is around to help.
On September 3, another incident occurred when a Sienna bus fell into the Omo river in Ijebu East. The driver was overspeeding, and the vehicle couldn’t handle it, causing it to plunge into the river from a bridge. Thankfully, responders from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were alerted and took immediate action to rescue the occupants of the bus. While one person was saved, seven others lost their lives in this tragic accident.
The FRSC has attributed these accidents to reckless driving and has emphasized the importance of caution on the roads. It’s crucial for drivers to follow speed limits, stay alert, and avoid distractions while driving. Additionally, it’s essential for passengers to wear seat belts and be aware of their surroundings.
Authorities are also exploring ways to improve safety measures along these rivers, such as installing barriers or warning signs to alert drivers of the potential danger.
The rivers of Ogun State have claimed the lives of many travelers over the past four years. It’s a heartbreaking reality that we must address. By raising awareness about these dangers and promoting responsible driving, we can work towards preventing future tragedies and ensuring safer journeys for everyone.
