Hey there, middle schoolers! Today, we’re going to talk about something serious: poverty in Bayelsa State. Engr. Udengs Eradiri, the Labour Party governorship candidate, recently spoke out about how bad things are in Bayelsa. He said that Bayelsa is the second poorest state in Nigeria, right after Sokoto State. That’s not good news at all!
Eradiri thinks that the poor rankings of Bayelsa in all economic and developmental areas show that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the state Governor, Douye Diri, have failed the state. He’s really disappointed because he can’t understand why Bayelsa is so poor, especially when it has a small population and gets a lot of money from different sources.
Eradiri believes that the PDP and Diri are to blame for Bayelsa’s problems. He says that they have been clueless, incompetent, greedy, wasteful, and have made policies that don’t help the people. He thinks that they have no idea how to solve the issues that Bayelsa is facing.
Eradiri mentioned a report by a data technology company called StatiSense. This report, which came out in 2022, shows how many people in the Niger Delta states are living in poverty. It’s really alarming and distressing. According to the report, 2.61 million out of 2.9 million people in Bayelsa are extremely poor. That means 88% of the population is struggling, even though Bayelsa is an oil-rich state.
Eradiri thinks that this upcoming election is a chance for the people to make a change. He believes that Diri and the PDP don’t have the best interests of Bayelsa at heart. He wants the people to give them a “red card” and kick them out of power.
So, middle schoolers, it’s important to pay attention to what’s happening in our state. Poverty is a serious issue, and we need leaders who will work hard to make things better for everyone. Let’s hope that the people of Bayelsa make the right decision in the upcoming election!
