The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has a condition for considering Atiku Abubakar’s merger proposal. They want Atiku to back Rabiu Kwankwaso for the presidency in 2027. According to the NNPP, joining forces with Kwankwaso is crucial for Atiku to maintain his political relevance in Nigeria.
Atiku Abubakar, concerned about the APC’s potential move towards a one-party state, called for opposition parties to unite and challenge the ruling party. He believes that a merger is necessary to counter the growing dominance of the APC.
Yakubu Shendam, the spokesperson for the NNPP, responded to Atiku’s call for a merger. He described it as a reactive measure, comparing it to taking medicine after falling sick. Shendam emphasized that any future collaboration should not be based on emotions.
The NNPP believes that Rabiu Kwankwaso has the capacity to lead Nigeria in 2027. They urged Atiku to support Kwankwaso, stating that it is essential for Atiku to align himself with Kwankwaso if he wants to remain relevant in the political landscape.
The NNPP spokesperson said, “We are calling on Atiku as an elder brother to close ranks with Kwankwaso if he wants to be relevant in 2027. We believe that there is a need to seek support from all sides to win the election. However, we firmly believe that Kwankwaso alone can deliver Nigeria in 2027.”
The NNPP expressed openness to players like Atiku joining their party. However, they made it clear that any merger should be with the NNPP. As Atiku is retiring, the NNPP believes he should support Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.
