There is a building called Datkem Plaza in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State. It is owned by Mrs. Olufunke Daniel, the wife of former Governor Gbenga Daniel. This building has five floors and it was approved by the state government in 2009. The government planned to officially open it by the end of September.
Early on a Sunday morning, the Ogun State Government started demolishing Datkem Plaza. Government officials and security agents were present during the demolition. The government had given a notice about the demolition three days prior.
The government stated that there were a few reasons for the demolition. They said there was not enough parking space, an inadequate muster point, and inadequate airspace. These were the main reasons why they decided to tear down the building.
The contractor, Engr Olusegun Lawal, mentioned that the building was worth N1 billion and had no structural defects. He also stated that all the necessary government approvals had been obtained. Former Governor Daniel, who is now a Senator, visited the site to see the situation for himself.
The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Dapo Abiodun, Lekan Adeniran, said that the State Government would soon release a statement regarding the incident. We will have to wait and see what they have to say.
