Did you know that many young Nigerians and their parents are opting to pursue higher education in Ghana and Togo? Well, according to Prof Busari Shaamsuddeen Akande, an education expert, there are several reasons behind this trend. One of the main factors is the safe environment these countries offer. Unlike in Nigeria, there are no issues of strikes disrupting academic activities in Ghana and Togo. Additionally, these countries provide a quality supply of electricity, ensuring a conducive learning environment for students.
Another reason why students are flocking to Ghana and Togo is the tailor-made specialization of university courses. In these smaller neighboring countries, universities focus on specific fields of study. For example, in Benin Republic, there is a university dedicated solely to management sciences. This specialization allows students to gain in-depth knowledge and skills in their chosen fields, making them well-prepared for the job market.
Prof Akande also suggests ways in which Nigeria can attract investors to improve its educational sector. By emphasizing the quality of learning and expanding higher education through alternative financing mechanisms, universities can become less reliant on government funding. Additionally, paying attention to early childhood development and early reading can help create a strong foundation for future education. Promoting autonomy and accountability within the educational sector can also make it more appealing to investors.
